Get Skin that Glows: Exfoliate!

exf002web Exfoliating is a important step in your skincare regime. Our skin is constantly regenerating cells. It is made of several layers. Skin of all ages produces new cells, which start at the bottom layer and move to the surface, eventually shedding off. In children this happens every 2-3 weeks, but as we age, the process becomes slower and takes approximately a month for new cells to get to the top layer. The more dead skin cells that stay on the surface of your skin, the more dull and dehydrated it looks. Dead skin cells also clog pores and can cause blemishes and scaling. Acne causing bacteria feed on the oil trapped by skin cells that don’t turn over fast enough. UV rays decrease cell turnover even more. Exfoliating your face on a regular basis can improve the results of your skincare products and bring more life to your skin. It can improve your skin texture, reduce the appearance of pores, and help clear acne breakouts. No matter your skin type, everyone can benefit from exfoliating. There are two types of exfoliation: 1. Physical such as scrubs, brushes 2. Chemical such as glycolic and salicylic acid, retinol etc. Exfoliation should leave your skin soft, glowing and healthy looking, not red and irritated. For some people, exfoliating scrubs may be too harsh, so a chemical exfoliator would work better. Exfoliating about twice a week is recommended for most people, but this also depends on your skin. Whatever method you choose, remember to be kind to your skin. Treat it like a fragile fabric. No matter your skin type, exfoliation should always be followed by a moisturizer and be sure to use sunscreen, since you are exposing new skin cells, you will burn easier. Get Skin that Glows: Exfoliate!

  • Click through the slideshow to read about some of the best exfoliators to keep your skin glowing.

  • The Clairsonic Mia

The Clarisonic gently removes impurities that traditional methods leave behind and it’s gentle enough to use everyday. It’s an effective exfoliator that can be used along with other methods of exfoliation. A good investment that will last years. The Mia I love because it’s travel size. (I use mine every few days though not everyday)

  • Peter Thomas Roth Un-wrinkle Peel Pads

These pads really make your skin glow with a combination of alpha, beta, hydroxy, and amino acids, plus botanical extracts. These double sided pads are a favorite that’s hard to beat for it’s ability to rejuvenate the skin.

  • Glamglow

One of my favs! It’s expensive but I use it before an important event or outing! The “YouthMud” version (not pictured) is actually my top choice. You will have smaller pores, fewer blackheads, and it leaves your face feeling so fresh and clean. A thin film is all you need once a week or so.

  • Kate Somerville ExfoliKate

All of Kate Sommerville’s exfoliators are great. They contain retinyl palmitate, (vitamins A,D,&E) strong anti oxidants to help regulate cell turnover. They also contain papaya and pumpkin enzymes, pineapple enzymes, and lactic acid. The microbeads gently lift dead skin cells revealing the fresh, clearer, skin beneath.

  • Anew Clinical Advanced Retexturizing Peel

Avon makes some good skin products and the Anew line is very popular. These peel pads have 35% glycolic acid so they do a great job of sloughing off that dead skin. They are gentle and easy to use. Just swipe on a pad at bedtime.

  • Bliss ” Micro Magic” Spa Powered Microdermabrasion Treatment

Exfoliates with a blend of volcanic pumice, vitamin E and aloe. A good once a week deep cleansing treatment. Wet face and very gently apply with fingertips in a circular motion. Don’t rub too harshly. Rinse thoroughly, then apply your favorite moisturizer.

  • Philosophy The Microdelivery Exfoliating Wash

For those with sensitive skin, this is gentle enough to use everyday. Makes your skin so soft and refreshed.

  5. Anastasia says:

I was thinking to try Clairsonic, but my cosmetologist said it’s not good because can stretch the skin cells even if use it gently, and moreover the skin must be without any minor blemishes. Have you tried it yourself?

  6. Vanessa says:

    I love clarisonic!

  7. Shea Marie says:

Hi Anastasia, I’ve had my Clarisonic for about two years. I use it every few days or so. It’s great for clogged pores in problem areas such as nose and chin. It also removes dry, flaky skin. I think that any physical exfoliation can be rough on the skin if you overdo it, either too often or by rubbing too harshly. The Clarisonic seems like a pretty gentle method of exfoliation to me.
