Lay Off the Potato Chips: 10 Healthy Snack Alternatives

  • First things first, let’s get one thing out of the way: Snacking keeps me sane. With a constant busy schedule, I often find myself needing something to munch on while sitting in LA traffic. That being said, you won’t find me near a bag of Lays, or a 3 Musketeers bar. I make sure that even when I am snacking I am putting good ingredients into my body. A busy schedule is never an excuse to turn a blind eye to your health!
So today I am going to share with you my top 10 favorite healthy snacks. They are all available at your local Whole Foods, and are the best alternatives to traditional snacks that I’ve found.

  • 1. Alive & Radiant: Organic Kale Krunch (Chocolate)
I’m going to start with the most obvious swap for a regular chip: The Kale Chip. These are not your ordinary kale chip! They are chocolate covered, and yes I realize how that sounds. But trust me on this, they are DELICIOUS. Kale is already a superstar in the nutrient world as it includes vitamins A, C, K, B6, as well as fiber, protein, calcium, and many more good-for-you vitamins and minerals. These kale chips get better because they are covered in cacao powder, which is high in antioxidants, magnesium, potassium, and has also been shown to lower your chances of cardiovascular disease. They are gluten-free, organic, and the only ingredients are Kale, Cacao Beans, Vanilla, Coconut Palm Sugar, and Pumpkin Seeds.

  • 2.ENLIGHTENED The Good-For-You Crisp: Roasted Broad Beans (Mesquite BBQ)
These yummy crispy beans are amazing for anyone who needs something crunchy to much on, and for anyone who is a once-upon-a-time lover of barbecue chips. Instead of being covered in unhealthy oils and artificial ingredients, these Non-GMO broad beans are seasoned with ingredients like garlic, tomato, and chili powder and then roasted in sunflower oil. They are 100 Calories per serving, low in fat, pack 7 grams of protein, and 3 grams of fiber. And for all of you non-meat eaters out there… rejoice because they are also certified vegan!

  • 3.Navitas Naturals Power Snacks (Coffee Cacao)
Gluten-free, Raw, Vegan, and Organic, and they taste like little bites of mocha-brownie heaven. Included in the ever so delicious ingredient list are super foods like chia seeds, maca, cacao, and camu-camu. These ingredients are beneficial for vitamin C, omega fatty acid, and dietary fiber consumption. Chia seeds are famous for packing an unbelievable amount of nutrients in very small amounts as well as very few calories. Maca powder is great for mood balance and overall health. Camu-camu delivers Valine (an essential amino acid which our bodies need to get from food, and helps with prevention of muscle breakdown), along with potassium, and Gallic Acid (which has anti-fungal and anti-viral properties). They contain zero refined sugar, artificial flavors, or artificial colors. All this, while tasting like your favorite naughty treat!

  • 4. Go Raw: Carrot Cake Super Cookies
I’ll be honest with this one; they are more like carrot crackers than carrot cake cookies. That aside, they are yummy, hearty, and will satisfy any carrot cake cravings you are having! These lovely snacks are Organic, Gluten Free, Certified Vegan, Raw, and Kosher. Having been dried under 105° F, means they are considered “raw” or “live”, which is optimal for your body to consume all the nutrients from the ingredients, because they were never destroyed by heat. Go Raw promises that all their seeds are selected from the very best organic growers, rinsed with filtered water, and sprouted to perfection.

  • 5. Brussel Bytes: Chili Pumpkin Seed Crunch
Everyone’s least favorite childhood food: turned into a mouthwatering snack. On the bag it claims to be a “Brussel & Kale Crunch Snack of Chili Pumpkin Love”. That description says it all! Brussel sprouts are rich in vitamins C and K, as well as potassium phosphorus, copper, and manganese. With nutritious ingredients like kale, raw cashews, carrots, raw pumpkin seeds, and cilantro, they are packed with an insane amount of vitamins and minerals. Completely organic, gluten free, non-GMO, and vegan, they had me in love at first byte!

  • 6. Royal Hawaiian Orchards: Sea Salt Macadamias
These are basically just roasted macadamia nuts sprinkled with a bit of sea salt. “Subtle yet sublime” is what the bag claims, and boy are they right! Macadamia nuts are an amazing source of dietary fiber, but their greatest asset is that they contain no cholesterol. Macadamia nuts get a bad rep for being very fatty, but what you need to know is that they are healthy fats, and the nuts are rich in mono-unsaturated fatty oleic and palmitoleic acids. These have been shown to help lower LDL (bad) cholesterol. This simple snack is also a great one for all of you with gluten sensitivities or celiac disease, as it contains no gluten or traces of wheat. Also, if you decide to pick up this specific brand, feel safe knowing they are certified non-GMO.

  • 7. Just Pure Foods: Tomato Chips Pesto Flavor
The picture on the bag looks pretty un-appealing, but if you can get past that, I promise the taste is worth it! Another raw snack, the nutrients in these pesto covered dried tomatoes are fully intact and ready to be absorbed by your body! Tomatoes aid in digestion, are high in antioxidants, lower hypertension, and improve vision. They also taste incredible! If you are not a tomato person, I wouldn’t recommend these to you, but for everyone else these vegan, gluten-free, organic, nut and yeast free snacks are a must.

  • 8. Laughing Giraffe Organics: Lemon Snakaroons
This company’s mission is to make nutritional snacks that taste great; using unprocessed organic ingredients so that each bite is rich in nutritional value. These Lemon Snackaroons will satisfy your sweet cravings with ingredients like organic agave nectar, organic coconut sugar, and organic lemon oil. There are zero preservatives added, and they are organic, non-GMO, raw vegan, and gluten free. A great source of healthy fats, they are the perfect alternative to store bought coconut macaroons.

  • 9. Whole Foods Market: Wasabi Peas
Warning to those who dislike spice or wasabi: Skip to the next snack! But for all of the fans keep on reading. Many people don’t know that Wasabi is actually an Asian superfood. It fights off bacterial infection, helps prevent cancer, clears your sinuses, and reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease. It is also high in manganese, potassium, and calcium. Peas on the other hand, are amazing for support in blood sugar regulation, protection against stomach cancer, are high in antioxidants, and promote heart health. So the combination of wasabi and Non-GMO peas, while a little unusual, is a healthy, nutritious, and crunchy way to satisfy your spicy craving!

  • 10. Two Moms in the Raw: Blueberry Nut Bar
When the ingredient list is short and sweet, you know that usually it will be a good food. This delicious alternative to your regular grocery store granola bar only contains: Organic Almonds, Organic Pecans, Organic Walnuts, Organic Blueberries, Organic Agave, Organic Spices, and Sea Salt. These bars are handmade, raw vegan, and Gluten free. The nuts in this will definitely keep you full, and the blueberries are high in antioxidants. Everything is bound together and sweetened with organic Agave, which is naturally a low glycemic sweetener. I’m obsessed with these and always make sure to have one in my bag in case hunger arises!
