Best of Travel 2014

  • It’s been an absolute whirlwind of a year and although I’ve been taking the past two weeks off for the holidays there’s no way I’d forget my best of 2014 posts! First up… travel. I’ve been extremely blessed to have had the opportunity to travel the world the past few years. Something, at one time not too far in the past, I could have only dreamed of. Logging nearly 150,000 flight miles this year alone, I calculated it all out (yes I’m weird like that). I spent at least one hour a day in a plane. :/ And yes I still hate flying.

My life has changed in ways I could have never imagined and looking back at all of these photos gives me chills to think I was actually able to experience all of this beauty and culture. From 2 hour drives outside of my home in Los Angeles deep into the desert, to 24 hour plane rides to opposite ends of the world; and everywhere in between. There are so many places still that I can’t wait to visit but these are some of the highlights of my year in travel.

  • 1) Hong Kong: It was my first trip ever to Asia and I was blown away by the beauty, culture and also modernization of Hong Kong. On one end you have central HK booming with fabulous trendy restaurants, nightlife, art and boutiques (not to mention everyone speaks English), and right across the water you have Kowloon with it’s nightmarkets, traditional cuisine and flurries of locals picking up fresh fish and meat from the wet markets. To see my full Hong Kong post go here.

    Quick 5 Favorites:

    Dinner: Yardbird

Lunch: Elephant Grounds for Coffee and Pressed Juices for Juice

    Drinks: Sevva

Place to shop: Kowloon Night Markets and Lane Crawford

Must do: Hike up to The Peak to see the view

  • 2) Bali, Indonesia: I think it’s safe to say I left my heart in Bali. What an absolutely breathtaking place. It’s so much larger than I realized with endless amounts to see I could have spent weeks exploring. You have beach life Bali- swimming, sun, surf, cliffs and coves, and then you have have mountain life- jungles, yoga retreats, rafting, rice fields. Oh the list goes on.

You can see my Bali beach post here! And since I never finished my post about Ubud and the jungles of Bali a lot of these photos have never been seen before. White water river rafting through the jungle was maybe the most incredible experience of my life.

    Quick 5 Favorites:

    Dinner: Mexicola in Seminyak

    Lunch: Alchemy in Ubud

Drinks: Singlefin in Uluwatu and Deus Ex Machina in Canguu

Place to shop: Markets in Ubud

Must do: White water rafting in Ubud, sunsets at Rockbar

  • Tulum, Mexico: This is a place to visit as soon as possible before it gets too touristy- because it’s happening very quick. It’s island-life charm is undeniable. Resorts where shoes are optional and your room is a beach front hut on the sand. White beaches for miles, bike rides, real coconut water, fresh smoothies, outdoor restaurants with colored lights strung everywhere, fresh seafood galore- it is really straight out of a tropical paradise dream.

    Quick 5 Favorites:

    Dinner: Hartwood, Be Tulum

    Lunch: Posada Margherita

    Drinks: Smoothies at Ahau

Place to shop: Don’t- just take your shoes off and relax.

Must do: You don’t have to do anything, that’s the beauty of it. Just drink a margerita out of a coconut and turn off your phone.

  • Paris, France: Oh Pari! City of love- or really the city of shopping and fashion! I’m very lucky to get to go to Paris quite often for work. Although most of my trips are business I’ve really gotten the chance to explore as well by taking a day or two every trip for myself, from of course shopping, museums, all the notable landmarks and even Versailles.

    Quick 5 Favorites:

    Dinner: Moustache, Caviar Kaspia ($$$)

    Lunch: L’Avenue

    Drinks: Hotel Costes

Place to shop: Everywhere!! Colette, Rue St Honore

Must do: Bike ride along the Seine and throughout the city.

  • New York, NY, USA: My home away from home! Really the most vibrant, lively, non-stop city in the world.

    Quick 5 Favorites:

Dinner: Chalk Point Kitchen, Perla, Rubirosa, Lure

    Lunch: Cafe Gitane, Bar Pitti

Brunch: The Smile, Jacks Wife Frieda, Hundred Acres,

Drinks: The Bowery, Soho House, The Mercer

Place to shop: Kirna Zabete, Intermix, Barneys, 5th Avenue

Must do: Meet people! Try restaurants and bars, explore!

  • Panarea, Sicily, Italy: My obsession with Italy started years ago long before my blog and every summer I’ve got to visit a new part of Italy I hadn’t seen before- from Rome, to Milan, Venice, Florence, all over Tuscany, all down the Amalfi coast. And this summer, Sicily. Well Panarea and Vulcano to be exact. The crystal-clear, deep blue Mediterranean meets white cobblestone streets, lined with vivid bougainvillea, lemon trees, and orange blossoms; all lingering below staggering volcanic cliffs. An absolute reminder of all that is beautiful in the world.  You can see my full Panarea post here.

    Quick 5 Favorites:

    Dinner: Hycesia

    Lunch: Hotel Cincotta

    Drinks: Wine anywhere!

Place to shop: Not a place for shopping.

Must do: Rent a boat and ride along the Mediterranean – you can rent a small boat for 100 euros a day.

  • Milan, Italy: Over the past few years I’ve spent a lot of time in Milan, sometimes staying a month at a time. Although my Italian skills are progressing slowly my friends and love for the city are not. Some of my closest friends in the world live in Milan and once you visit it’s easy to see why- the Italian culture is just so welcoming. Of course the city is beyond inspiring in the fashion world as well, being the home base for nearly every major Italian fashion brand- the city just breathes fashion. Of course I would like that.

    Quick 5 Favorites:

    Dinner: Drogheria Milanese

Lunch: Camillo in Piazza Cavaour,Il Salumaio di Montenapoleone

Drinks: Ceresio 7, and to party: Plastic

Place to shop: Via della Spiga

    Must do: Visit the Duomo.

  • Marrakesh, Rabat & Essaouria, Morocco, Africa: I did such in depth Morocco posts that you just have to read them! So I’m not even going to write anything here. If you have any interest in going to Morocco read both my posts because I share everything!!

    Morocco Post 1 |  Morocco Post 2

    Quick 5 Favorites:

    Dinner: Comptoir Darna Marrakech

Drinks: La Mamounia Hotel in Marrakech

Place to shop: The Souks in Marrakech Center

Must do: Visit the spice markets in the Medina, see the goats in the trees on the drive to Essaouira.

  • Death Valley, Desert, California: Sometimes you don’t have to travel a world away to find amazing places. Southern California is one of those very rare unique places in the world where in a few hours drive you can go to the beach, the snow, the mountains, or the desert. Driving out to the desert, from Coachella to Palm Springs and even to infamous Death Valley is one of my favorite things to do. The roads are endless and at every turn you find something amazing.

    Quick 5 Favorites:

Dinner: Whatever burger joint you can find.

Lunch: Not a lot of options! Pack your own. Picnic!

Drinks: Dirty old trucker bar, but it’s part of the journey.

Place to shop: Forget about it.

Must do: Take lots of photos, hike, explore, get lost. Go to Devil’s Golf Course (pictured above.)

  • Antelope Valley, Poppy Reserve, California, USA: Another gem near to my home (about a 2 hour drive) that I discovered this year. It really was spectacular to see. But California poppies are only in bloom in April/May so it’s a short span!

  • Home Sweet Home, Los Angeles, California: “Oh how beautiful it is to travel, until he comes home to rest his head on an old familiar pillow.”  The more I am blessed with the opportunity to travel the more I realize there is nowhere in the world like Southern California. I grew up here so I took for granted so many things. The smile it puts on your face to wake up everyday to sunshine is something I wouldn’t change for the world. People ask me all the time why I don’t move to New York- and although I love to travel and work there as much as possible, I wouldn’t give up California for the world!

    Quick 5 Favorites:

Dinner: Gjelina in Venice, Nobu in Malibu (the most beautiful restaurant in LA) The Nice Guy in West Hollywood, Chateau Marmont West Hollywood, Sugarfish in Hollywood, Pace in West Hollywood, Son of A Gun in West Hollywood

Drinks: Chateau Marmont in West Hollywood, The Nice Guy in West Hollywood, The Basement in Venice, Oscars Cerveteca in Venice,

Place to shop: Just One Eye, Intermix, Reformation, Barney’s, Maxfield

Must do: Drive along PCH through Malibu

Not a day, minute or second goes by that I’m not thankful for everything I’ve been able to experience. Thank you to everyone I met along the way, your kindness and generosity, everyone who stops me on the street to say hello, everyone who leaves me sweet motivating comments. I love you all!
